Fortunately, in these troubled times, we have Sophia Taylor.

People who’ve encountered the little Crofton girl’s story on the Courier website, in the physical newspaper or through Facebook have been amazed with her rapid turnaround. Sophia’s rise from a terrible fall has been just the thing to bring a smile to our faces, lift our spirits and at least temporarily forget about all the strife we’re inundated with on a daily basis.

Sophia is a very sweet girl and shows few, if any, physical or emotional scars left over from the ordeal she’s been through after taking a 20-foot tumble onto concrete at a Ladysmith park.

People are so pleased she’s made what certainly seems to be a complete recovery in such a short time. The prospects were bleak in the beginning and her mother Selina even admitted that first week at BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver was extremely hard.

Sophia had a fractured skull and other significant injuries and her face was left multicoloured with black, blue, red and yellow marks.

But out of the darkness came a remarkable light. She recovered very quickly. Even the most eternal optimist couldn’t have expected that to happen in the course of three weeks.

Within a month of her fall, she was back home again and acting like nothing had happened. She displayed absolutely no fear, running down a relatively steep paved driveway at her home without hesitation.

You wonder if she’ll ever remember anything in the future when told about the incident. It’s probably just as well those recollections might be vague at best so she can continue to live life to the fullest.

Every child takes a beating of some sort during their lifetime just from being a kid. Lots of boo-boos, scrapes, scratches and even burns are bound to happen, just not to the extent that Sophia experienced.

Princess Sophia has taken her throne as Chemainus Valley royalty for giving us hope in all situations, no matter how dire they might initially seem. Public comments continue to pour in, with Lia Versaevel summing it up so eloquently: “Miracles do happen!”

Whether you believe in it or not, this is a story with a fairy tale ending that we’re all only too happy to embrace.
