Letter: How many gas stations and drive-throughs do we need?

Just because we’re a small community doesn’t mean we have to think small
letters

Dear Mr. Justice:

I just read the Nov. 6 Cowichan Valley Citizen article on the proposed gas station and drive-throughs at the Henry Road site.

I wholeheartedly agree with you supporting the OCP which discourages more auto-oriented development.

With the North Cowichan website claiming to be pro climate adaption and pro biodiversity, I don’t see how anyone can condone more pavement for more fossil fuel related businesses.

Besides, how many gas stations and drive-throughs do we need between Mill Bay and Chemainus?

I can think of hundreds of green business ideas for both an industrial site and commercial zone: solar panel build and installation, green roof installation and maintenance, car sharing service, bicycle repair and rentals, energy auditing.... How about a retailer that at least supports recycling such as Patagonia, MEC, or any of a hundred great eco friendly stores already thriving in Canada?

Just because we’re a small community doesn’t mean we have to think small.

How about we use an ounce of imagination and/or simple Google searches for viable businesses besides fast food? Good grief. And if the ‘green agenda’ does not appeal to other members, perhaps they would be more concerned about the health and wellness of their constituents. Gas and fast food translates to toxic air, obesity, diabetes, asthma and cancer.

If you need references and examples of all this information, please let me know.

What can I do to help avoid another ugly, traffic-choking, GHG spewing, garbage-food shovelling small town corner? I’d be happy to help.

Kindest regards,

T. Kempton
