Lessons to be learned from Mountain Equipment Co-Op failure

Board did not recognize its priority to serve members

The recent news has described financial failure of the popular Mountain Equipment Co-Op.

This sad outcome is not a surprise considering that over the years MEC has been taken over by a board of directors who did not recognize that the first priority is to serve the members. They did not have the mindset to balance good business practice with environmental concerns.

As a result, there was a focus on green issues and grants to environmental causes amounted to millions of dollars. Now we have financial failure.

There is a lesson here as we vote provincially and municipally.
