It’s high time to start taking some hard action on crime.
A certain individual who struck twice in the early morning hours Monday has people up in arms around Chemainus.
The criminals don’t care and have become more brazen than ever because nothing is ever done to them. They aren’t lawyers, but most of them know the law and that they won’t be punished severely even if they’re eventually caught.
One of the wonderful bear statues stolen at the Secret Garden Ice Cream Shoppe was dislodged from re-bar and cement so even anchoring things doesn’t stop the hoodlums.
The three bears were fortunately reunited and the suspect arrested Tuesday night.
Excellent video of the culprit from the store’s surveillance showed the numbskull kicking at the bear several times before dislodging it, but that required breaking off the feet.
No statues, sculptures or any property are safe these days because the idiots will still find a way to take them.
But then what happens when these person are caught and charged?
They might get a slap on the wrist, but you can guarantee it won’t be much of a penalty. Most of these culprits are multiple repeat offenders and the justice system doesn’t provide any deterrent.
The same jerk was then apparently seen on footage around Sandpiper Gardens and Glass. According to a Facebook post from Scott Borge, Sandpiper had a gas tank drilled.
As residents know by now, there was a huge response from North Cowichan, firefighters and ambulance personnel later Monday morning because gas had leaked into the storm basin and the smell penetrated into the Croft Place building.
These thefts have got to stop. People in many communities are dealing with the same thing.
Perhaps Chemainus and Crofton has to look at funding full-time security personnel who could watch over the communities at night. Ward Yeager also had an excellent idea to install closed circuit monitors at all the entrances to town where it would be easy to trace the movements of thieves.
