As a former school teacher, I encouraged young people to become responsible citizens. This included preparing them for their right to vote.
We also visited the provincial legislature in Victoria many times. Every time, my students were appalled by the adversarial nature of our governance. Surely, they said, there must be a better alternative to the negative back-biting.
On the other hand, they discovered that proportional representation systems in the majority of the world’s democracies lead to a more inclusive, collaborative government.
I encourage the citizens of the Cowichan Valley to find out the other benefits of proportional representation before they mail back their ballots this autumn.
