Cutting down trees in a climate crisis shocking

Keeping forests standing one of the very best things to mitigate climate change

Re: No revenue from forest program shocking.

What I find deeply shocking is that people still find so many reasons to cut down trees, despite the climate emergency.

Recently, scientists informed us the greenhouse gases being released as arctic permafrost rapidly melts were not factored into current estimates of climate warming. So things are much worse than we thought. And those who have been paying attention were already deeply concerned.

Keeping forests standing is one of the very best things we can do to mitigate climate change. Planting new trees is also important, but will take decades to become effective.

Trees are among our best climate sequestration devices. Big trees are the most efficient. In fact, it can take 200 to 300 saplings (or even more, depending on size) to replace the work of one single mature tree.

How important will all those other considerations be on an overheated planet where people can’t survive?
