Canadian spirit taking a beating in pipeline dispute

Olympic Games and Humboldt support overshadowed by senseless quibbling

We are a country united by triumph and grief.

Not long ago, we were celebrating the huge successes of our Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Games teams in South Korea. Our Winter Olympic medal count was the most in history.

Athletes have obviously worked very hard to become among the elite in the world in their respective sports and the backing of the entire nation has played a huge part.

Suddenly, we’re hit by devastating news that will be difficult to grasp for a long time to come, the tragic death of 16 people aboard the Humboldt Broncos hockey team bus in Saskatchewan.

We know so many people are hurting and we’ve been quick to come to their aid with emotional and financial support. That’s the Canadian way.

In between those two scenarios, we have the ridiculous bickering between the provincial governments of B.C. and Alberta over the Kinder Morgan pipeline twinning, with the feds in Ottawa standing rather weakly firm that it should be built.

Alberta Premier Rachel Notley’s stance that she’s going to retaliate in every means possible if she doesn’t get her way is pure childish.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is still trying to be everyone’s friend and that’s just not going to work in the long run. His support of the project is about boosting the economy, but certainly not about protecting the environment at the same time as he claims.

To B.C. Premier John Horgan’s credit, he has taken a tough stance but isn’t being a baby about what will happen if pipeline opposition turns out to be a losing battle.

The courts will ultimately decide and let’s just hope our true Canadian spirit seen in other facets of life shines through.
