Business candidates rule

Never have I been so excited about an election! Some of us in the business community here in Lake Cowichan are looking forward to the prospect of seeing some new faces and hopefully more cooperation from town hall.

I’ve become somewhat disappointed with the hostile business environment here since we opened our doors a decade ago, so this time I’m voting for other business people who will hopefully better represent us. The current administration tends to promote the big franchises and overlook the unique little ma and pa operations that make the town special.

Someone who understands the challenges of running a small business in this town is councillor Lorna Vomacka at the Loonie Bin Emporium. She’s always made herself accessible to me at her business and even drops by mine occasionally to keep me updated on town issues.

Saint Lorna the Compassionate really shows that she cares, and not just at election time. She describes herself as a “people’s politician” and jokes “I know people in low places.” But jokes aside, Lorna advocates for the poor and the dispossessed and you can even find her in the schoolyard searching for abandoned needles. I hope the voters recognize her saintly qualities and will give her the chance to represent us all for a second term.

The Town of Lake Cowichan is essentially a business and therefore should operate as such. Rod Peters is the only mayoral candidate that has run a business here. I believe his 40 years of experience, as the owner/operator of the Irly Bird Home Centre, will be a valuable asset to the town.

Rod’s main platform is to address traffic safety issues on our main street and I’m all in favour of that. But it’s Rod’s sense of humour that impresses me the most. I admire anyone who can make fun of themselves and take a good ribbing, so with a nickname like “Porky” he has definitely won my vote.

Last but not least, is super-hero, Beverly North with her unique Deep Fried Ice Cream business, running for councillor. “I hate injustice,” says Bev and she can often be seen leaping tall buildings in a single bound, scooping kiddy cones with sprinkles or kindly making her business washroom available to the public.

Successful business people know they must treat the customer right, so I believe Deep Fried Wonder Woman, Saint Lorna and Porky Peters will make a formidable business team and one that will provide fair representation for all constituents. See you at the polls!
