I am writing in response to a letter to the editor published in the Feb. 1 edition regarding placement of the baseball venue for the BC Summer Games.

From July 19-22, the Cowichan region will host the Cowichan 2018 BC Summer Games – a region-wide event for B.C.’s elite young athletes. To ensure this truly is a region-wide event, competitions will happen at sport venues from Mill Bay and Shawnigan Lake in the south, to Maple Bay in the east, to Cowichan Lake in the west, and to Ladysmith in the north, with a further partnership with Nanaimo for synchronized swimming at Nanaimo Aquatic Centre.

As you can imagine, planning a multi-sport event of this size, with more than 2,800 athletes plus 550 coaches and 375 officials, is not an easy task. After over a year of planning, and with the Games less than six months away, we are happy to have all of our sport venues confirmed.

One of the many reasons we were able to submit a successful bid for these Games was the high number of great venues across the region.

As an important partner in these Games, Chemainus will be hosting two sports - wrestling at Chemainus Secondary School and box lacrosse at Fuller Lake Arena. The Best Western Plus Chemainus Inn is also the host hotel for the Games. It will be a major hub during the four days and also be used for many pre-Games events.

The entire team feels we have been able to fully showcase all areas of our beautiful region by ensuring that all venues, sports, accommodations, ceremonies, and entertainment have been fairly shared amongst the entire region.

Chemainus has had an amazing history with its strong volunteer community and we are positive we have a role for everyone within our Games.
