It is with immeasurable sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved and cherished Steven.
He will be remembered for his kindness, his loyalty to family and friends, and his immensely warm and welcoming nature by all those who were lucky enough to cross his path, both personally and professionally.
Left to mourn his passing are his loving and much-loved wife, Jean; his parents, Mike and Ann Batie; sister, Jillian Takel (Aaron); and his adored niece, Ellie Takel; as well as aunts, uncles, cousins and innumerable friends.
After growing up in Ladysmith, Steven went on to graduate from UVic and BCIT, later earning his CFP designation (Certified Financial Planner), as well as a Securities and Mortgage brokerage. He began his career with RBC and Blueshore Financial before achieving his dream in 2019 of opening his own company, Rothdale Pacific. Steven enjoyed his independence as an entrepreneur and thrived on interacting with his many treasured clients.
A talented athlete, Steven loved and excelled at sports. His athletic ability was revered by both teammates and opponents alike. As a youngster, Steven played hockey and baseball, and then, in grade eight, he found his true passion, rugby, a sport he was involved with for the rest of his life.
Locally, Steven was a proud member of the Ladysmith Blues, the Nanaimo Hornets, and the Mid Island Tsunami, as well as the UVic Vikes. He was honoured to be a member of the 2001 BC Canada Games Team, the U21 Canada World Cup team and, for several years, the Senior Men's BC Bears. For the past 15 years, he was a beloved member of the Burnaby Lake Rugby Club.
On the mainland, Steven was introduced by his rugby teammates to Muay Thai (kickboxing), which quickly became a new passion. He so loved the training involved, and teaching classes at the Westside Kickboxing Gym. As well, he and Jean pursued CrossFit together and running, participating in several long-distance events, including, for Steven, two marathons.
A memorial will be held on Sunday, November 14th at 12 pm at the Michael J. Fox Theatre in Burnaby (capacity 613, allowing for space to spread out for those with Covid, cold and flu concerns), followed by a reception at the Burnaby Lake Rugby Club. Vaccine Passports, ID and masks are required, and will be checked at both venues (no exceptions).
Please join us. Your support will be so very comforting. We ask that you honour Steven by being purposefully kind to others in his memory.
Memorial funds are being set up in Steven's honour to support the organizations that brought him much joy, including the UVic Vikes Rugby Program, the Burnaby Lake Rugby Club, and Westside Kickboxing.
