Joan Churcher passed away peacefully on Vancouver Island on January 7, 2021, aged 99 years.
She is remembered by her children Michael (Thelma), Jonathan (Marguerite Camus), Elisabeth (Timothy Denton), their families, and close friend Iris Churcher.
Joan was born the only child of Lilian and Archibald Webb in Southampton, England. She graduated as a registered nurse in Southampton and worked as a nurse and midwife during WWII.
She married George in 1946 and immigrated to Canada with their three children in 1952. After a year in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, the family moved to Quebec where they lived in St. Eustache, Westmount (Montreal), Sept-Iles, and the Eastern Townships. Joan worked as a nurse in Montreal and Sept-Iles.
When George's job took him overseas, Joan returned to nursing in Montreal.
She rejoined George in Australia and ended her career by serving as a supervising nurse in a hospice in Melbourne.
Soon after retirement, Joan and George moved to Ladysmith on Vancouver Island. After George's death in 1993, Joan moved to Chemainus. She was an active member of St. Michael's and All Angels Anglican Church. Her other passions included weaving, knitting, Tai Chi, and reading.
She lived in her own home until the end, passing away at the Cowichan District Hospital with son Jonathan by her side. Joan is survived by three children, five grandchildren and five great- grandchildren.
A memorial service will take place at St. Michael's and All Angels Church as soon as circumstances permit.
