1933-2022 ~ It is with very heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Elek Szucs at the Chemainus Healthcare Centre on February 9, 2022 at the age of 89 years.
Elek is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth; daughters: Elizabeth Spence (Rob) and Margaret Schrader (Darren).
He will be dearly missed by his two grandchildren Emily and Megan Schrader. He will also be lovingly remembered by his sister Juliska Szollosi and her family; sister-in-law Ilona Szucs and many friends both here and in Hungary.
He was predeceased by his parents, two sisters: Erzsike Irinyi and Etelka Szucs and his brother Peter Szucs.
Born in Hungary, Elek arrived in Canada in 1957. After various jobs in the Okanagan, Abbotsford and Port Alberni he settled in Chemainus. He married Elizabeth (Erzsebet) in Hungary in 1963. They returned to Canada to build a home and raise two children.
Elek worked for MacMillan Bloedel for 35 years, retiring in 1995. He had a passion for working with his hands which led him to build two houses. He was an avid gardener, enjoying his roses and his towering greenhouse hot peppers.
Elek was also involved in the Hungarian Cultural Society in Nanaimo since its inception. He volunteered at the club for many years and attended every dance and event he could. In his retirement he enjoyed spending time with his granddaughters and traveling to sunny destination with family and friends.
The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to all the amazing staff members of the Chemainus Heath Care Centre, where Elek spent his last two years. Also a sincere thanks to Dr. Broere. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in honour of Elek may be made to the Chemainus Health Care Centre or to the Alzheimer's Society. A Funeral Service and interment has taken place.
