A salvage operation that lasted several days off Saltair has concluded, apparently without success.

Curious onlookers were wondering what was happening, as a barge with a crane remained stationed in place. Dive boats and tugs were also employed as a freighter lost some 2,000 feet of anchor chain and the anchor.

“Transport Canada is aware of the salvage activity near Chemainus,” noted Sau Sau Liu, senior communications advisor, in an email on July 4. “The vessel owner is being proactive to remove the anchor in compliance with the Canadian Navigable Waters Act.”
