One month later, Cowichan fisherman still missing

Colin Court has been missing since Nov. 15 after disappearing while fishing near Youbou’s Shaw Creek

This weekend marks one month since the disappearance of Colin Court, 70, who went missing while fishing on Cowichan Lake on Nov. 15 and his family and friends are still working with Lake Cowichan RCMP to find him.

“We are not giving up on our search and the Lake Cowichan RCMP have been very caring and great to deal with regarding where our father may be,” said Court’s son, Bill Court. “They have been very helpful and as family we are thankful that they are not giving up on the search.”

Bill said the family has very much appreciated those that have supported and helped with the search.

“It’s been hard for everyone to deal with this situation,” Bill said, “but at the same time I’m very proud and lucky to have such a great and caring father that has touched many people over the years and having them come forward and saying what a great person our Dad is and all the things that he has done for people.”

There are questions that need to be answered and Colin Court’s family won’t stop until they know.

“There is so many unknowns what has happened with our Dad,” Bill said. “Again, if anyone saw him out fishing with his blue kayak by Shaw Creek and what time and place you saw him would be helpful.”

The Lake Cowichan RCMP’s phone number is 250-749-6668 and the reference police file is 2019-2000.

An avid fly fisherman, Court is believed to have set out near Shaw Creek on Lake Cowichan. His overturned kayak was spotted near the shore at the far end of the lake and RCMP said a motorist located his car at Little Shaw Campground, some 15 kilometres west of the community of Youbou.

The Lake Cowichan RCMP and others have been engaged in looking for Court since that time. An extensive search of the area was done by Cowichan and Ladysmith Search and Rescue volunteers. On Nov. 18, the BC RCMP Underwater Recovery Team also conducted a search of the area where Court was last seen.

“By the end of the week it’s going to be a month since he’s been missing,” RCMP spokesman Cpl. Chris Manseau said on Tuesday. “The investigation is ongoing and members are still combing the area and have done countless foot searches,” he added. “Files like this never get closed.”
