Rob Douglas has been elected as the new mayor of North Cowichan.
The two-term councillor decided to take a run at the mayor’s post and topped the race over two other contenders, John Koury and Rosalie Sawrie.
Douglas received a total of 3,503 votes compared to 2,747 for Koury and 2,195 for Sawrie.
Douglas ran on a campaign of priorities that included: tackling the housing crisis, defending the environment, ensuring a strong local economy and safe neighbourhoods and maintaining the rural character of the municipality.
“I’m excited,” said Douglas. “It’s a good mix of incumbents [on council] and some new faces. Looking forward to working with them.”
Douglas said he was confident going into election day and worked hard at getting out the vote.
“We knocked on over 10,000 doors,” he said. “We were getting a great response but you never know.”
Elected as councillors were: Mike Caljouw (4,361), Tek Manhas (4,289), Debra Toporowski (3,903), Christopher Justice (3,527), Bruce Findlay (3,343) and Chris Istace (3,142).
The voter turnout has been tabbed at just 32.53 per cent.
