Chemainus man facing drug charges in Ontario

A Chemainus man is facing four drug-related charges in Kenora, Ont.

James Sagriff, 35, is charged under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act with possession of a Schedule II substance for the purpose of trafficking - over three kilograms; possession of a Schedule II substance for the purpose of trafficking - under three kilograms; and trafficking of a Schedule II substance - cannabis marijuana, over three kilograms.

Sagriff was also charged with possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under the Criminal Code of Canada.

Members of the Kenora Ontario Provincial Police, Organized Crime and Enforcement Bureau, Kenora Drug Unit, Community Street Crime Unit and the Northwest Canine Unit investigated following a traffic stop on Highway 17A.

Police were on general law enforcement duties on Highway 17A in Haycock Township last Wednesday, Feb. 21 just before noon. A traffic stop was conducted on a pick-up truck for a Highway Traffic Act violation.

“Upon further investigation, they (police) could smell marijuana,” said Community Services/Media Relations Provincial Constable Laurie Harkof.

Police seized approximately 12 pounds of suspected marijuana and two pounds of hash/hash oil and drug paraphernalia plus a large amount of Canadian currency. The estimated street value of the drugs is $62,000.

Sagriff made a brief court appearance in Kenora Thursday and was remanded in custody until Wednesday, Feb. 28 when he will appear again via video link to answer the charges.
