The Duncan Christian School Chargers held the fifth seed going into the 2025 B.C. School Sports 'A' boys basketball provincial championships in Langley last week. When all was said and done, the team finished seventh overall.
The Chargers met No. 12-seed Meadowridge on Wednesday, March 5 in the opening round of the tournament, and stole a last-second 72-69 victory in spectacular fashion.
With 0.7 seconds left on the clock, DCS guard Nick Abi Hanna got the ball near the baseline and put up a three-point buzzer-beater to win.
Player of the Game Grayson Dunn led the way with 23 points, while Daniel Van Donkersgoed potted 18 and Ezra Wall added 14. Abi Hanna ended the game with seven.
DCS then faced Tsawwassen's Southpointe Academy in the final game of the day on Thursday, March 6, with the winner moving on to the semi-finals.
DCS clung to a two-point lead at the half but were unable to extend the gap. A 35-point effort from Dunn was bolstered by 18 points from both Van Donkersgoed and Abi Hanna but the team's 88-point total wasn't enough and Southpointe went on to win 95-88.
From there DCS matched up with Aberdeen Hall on Friday night with the winner going on to play for fifth and sixth in the tournament. Despite a strong effort, DCS fell short, losing 72-61. Dunn scored 19 points while Van Donkersgoed added 18.
In their final game of the event, DCS beat the Sparwood Spartens 64-55 on the strength of Dunn's 25-point effort and another 16 from Van Donkersgoed, who earned Player of the Game honours.
The win gave the team seventh overall in the 16-team provincial 'A' tournament.
Dunn was awarded the tournament's Most Inspirational Player award.
"This award, chosen by Provincial Boys Basketball, is based on: encouraging of teammates, unselfishness, a team-first attitude in their play, their work ethic, team leadership, effort, overcoming adversity, and skill," said DCS athletic director Tom Veenstra.
"With two big wins and two exciting games that could have gone either way, our Island Champion Chargers capped off a very successful season," Veenstra added. "We are very proud of your great accomplishments. We really want to thank our coaches, Carl Macdonald, Mike Dunn and Sondra Neudorf for their excellent coaching, leadership and mentorship on and off the court."

On Friday Brentwood suited up against Credo Christian School with the winner going on to play for ninth and 10th overall. Brentwood took a 75-70 victory with Temi Sapara earning Player of the Game honours with his 22 points. Lust added 17.
