After months of speculation, it has been announced that the property which previously housed the Chemainus Public Market will become a No Frills supermarket. No Frills is a Canadian chain of discount supermarkets owned by Loblaw Companies Limited, a subsidiary of George Weston Limited. There are over 300 franchise stores located in nine Canadian provinces.
A representative of Anthem Properties, the owner of the building, made the information public on Tuesday, Feb. 11.
"We are happy to announce that No Frills will be joining Chemainus Marketplace, complementing a strong mix of existing local and Canadian businesses like Beyond the Usual, Citrus Cycles, BC Liquor and Rexall," said Elisha McCallum, vice-president of communications for Anthem. "No Frills is a great addition to our one-stop, community shopping destination."
There is currently only one No Frills location on Vancouver Island — Tyler's No Frills in Port Alberni — making the Chemainus store the second on the Island."
Before the public market, the property was home to Chemainus Foods.
A No Frills grand opening is planned for later this year.
