Crofton Fire Department responded to a small fire in a scrapyard Tuesday afternoon at the Catalyst Paper Excellence Crofton pulp mill.

“Initially we had two halls responding from Crofton and Maple Bay, but Maple Bay was not required and Crofton handled it with their initial crew,” noted Martin Drakeley, the Municipality of North Cowichan’s manger of fire and bylaw services.

The fire was contained to an area of about six feet by six feet in a place known as the boneyard, according to a Catalyst employee at the security gate.

People on sight had it out before the arrival of firefighters and “we just ensured it was thoroughly wet,” added Drakeley.
