New Democrat MLA Doug Routley says the government’s grants for local non-profits will support arts and culture and sports organizations, enriching the lives of community members.

“These organizations work hard to promote creativity, teamwork and the value of coming together to celebrate community, and this funding is well-deserved,” said Routley, MLA for Nanaimo-North Cowichan. “The future of arts, culture and sport is bright here in Cowichan.”

The funding of more than $1.2 million for 45 organizations in the Cowichan Valley and Nanaimo region is part of $43 million+ being distributed to nearly 1,400 arts and culture and sport sector organizations across B.C. The arts and culture stream supports groups like choirs, arts councils, theatre companies, musicians, art galleries and organizations that promote and celebrate diverse cultures from around the world. The sports stream supports numerous local organizations for people of all ages and abilities.

Some of the organizations receiving funding in Nanaimo-North Cowichan include: the Gabriola Arts Council, Cowichan Valley Minor Hockey Association, Ladysmith Festival of Lights and the Nanaimo and District Lacrosse Association.

The Community Gaming Grants program distributes up to $140 million in grants annually to non-profit organizations across B.C. that improve and enrich the lives of people and communities. These include sports, arts, environmental, quality of life and health and safety organizations.
