Police are looking for witnesses to an accident near Russell Farms Market on the Trans Canada Highway.
At approximately 6:40 a.m. Dec. 8, a south-bound transport truck towing two trailers collided with the bridge crossing the Chemainus River near Mt. Sicker Road.
The truck was moving safely from the left lane to the right lane when two cars tried to pass it on the right at a high rate of speed.
One of the cars, described as a grey or silver Audi TT or a similar vehicle, made it past the truck and the other small, black car decided not to pass.
Witnesses said it appeared the two cars were racing each other, according to a police press release.
The truck made emergency manoeuvres to avoid hitting the silver car and clipped the edge of the bridge.
The truck then lost control and collided with the bridge in several sections, then with concrete medians at the south end of the bridge.
These concrete medians were pushed into the oncoming north-bound traffic lanes causing another collision between two cars.
There was extensive damage to the truck, trailers, bridge, medians and the two other vehicles in the second collision.
The silver and black cars did not remain at the scene and were not damaged.
Luckily, although there was severe property damage, there were no injuries.
Police want to speak to the drivers of both cars or speak to other witnesses that may have further information to identify them.
“North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP takes this type of aggressive driving very seriously and are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying those responsible,” said RCMP spokesman Sgt. Chris Swain.
