North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP’s Traffic and Community Engagement Unit, along with South Island Traffic Services, will be participating in a province-wide Light up the Highway campaign Friday June, 28 through Sunday, June 30.

Light up the Highway is part of an elaborate, province-wide, enforcement campaign geared toward education and prevention of impaired driving. Officers will be out doing enforcement in highly-visible, high-traffic areas looking for impaired drivers.

Officers will not only be out this weekend, but they’ll also be out unexpectedly and frequently all summer long to try and proactively prevent anyone who may be considering driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

“Plan ahead, call a sober friend, call a taxi, use transit,” noted North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP Inspector Chris Bear. “We want people to get in the habit of planning a safe ride home ahead of time.”

With the summer months upon us, people in the Cowichan Valley are attending barbecues, parties and events in abundance.

Each year in B.C., 68 people die in crashes that involve impaired driving and about half of those deaths occur during the summer months. ICBC supports enforcement activities, like Light up the Highway, to help make B.C. roads safer for everyone.
