The Cowichan Valley School District has accepted an offer of $1.81 million for the former Crofton Elementary School site on Robert Street.
The property was only on the market a week.
“We’ve accepted an offer, just waiting on it all to close up,” said Mike Russell, director of communications for the school district.
No other details on the purchaser and their plans for the site will be released until after the deal finalizes.
It’s been a long process to get to this point since the former school was abandoned in 2009 and a new Crofton Elementary opened on York Avenue.
The old school was only officially closed on Feb. 14, 2017 and the steps toward demolition began.
The district applied to the Ministry of Education for funds to help demolish the old school on Sept. 23, 2019. The ministry eventually provided $650,000 to demolish the school and restore the site that was completed in April of 2020.

“Late last year we put out a request for proposals for real estate services,” noted Russell.
The for sale signs no sooner went up at the end of October when an offer was made.
Once the sale is completed, Russell said the funds will “go into the big pot that’s our capital fund.”
A portion of that money will go toward the building of the new Cowichan Secondary School in Duncan that’s in the works now.
It’s anticipated the old Crofton Elementary site will be transformed into a housing project, but that’s yet to be confirmed.
