Alistair MacGregor, MP for Cowichan-Malahat-Langford, has launched his campaign to represent the riding on behalf of the NDP in the snap election that has been called for Sept. 20.

MacGregor, who has represented Cowichan-Malahat-Langford for the past six years, said the federal NDP is presenting its Ready for Better platform for the campaign, showing what a New Democrat government knows is possible and is willing to deliver.

He said Ready for Better is the NDP’s commitment to delivering to Canadians a future with healthcare, that puts Canadians first with good jobs and help when needed, where life is more affordable and the wealthiest pay their fair share, where Canadian communities can confront the climate crisis and win, and where the NDP take on long-standing inequalities that are hurting the country and end them.

“Our vision is built on our values – the ones that drive a movement to make things better for all,” MacGregor said.

“Our commitments are inspired by the hopes and dreams of Canadians today. New Democrats are ready to lead us forward together and get results for Canadians.”

MacGregor said the 18 months since the last federal election have been very challenging for Canadians across the country, and people on Vancouver Island people are worried about jobs, the health of loved ones, and the public services they rely on, and the Ready for Better platform lays out a plan to deal with these issues.

He said he’s proud to have been the MP for the riding for the past six years.

“Whether it’s protecting our coast against anchorages and tackling climate change, fighting for Indigenous rights, making better agricultural policy, combating the opioid epidemic, or ensuring a recovery from the global pandemic that sees our communities and small businesses bounce back and prosper, I’ve worked hard to make sure your voices are well represented in Ottawa,” MacGregor said.

“The past six years of Liberal government have left a lot to be desired. With a global pandemic part of Canada’s current reality, it has been harder to keep up, as wages stay the same and good jobs with benefits become harder to find. Out-of-pocket healthcare costs are rising, and the Liberals joined with Conservatives to vote against NDP initiatives to set up national pharmacare and dental care systems.”

MacGregor added that the evidence of rapid and dangerous climate change is all around, but the Liberals are clinging to Stephen Harper-era climate change targets and have invested billions of dollars in fossil fuel infrastructure and subsidies. “With the climate crisis reaching irreversible stages and threatening everything we hold dear, going back to the way things were simply isn’t good enough,” he said.
