What intersection in the Chemainus area do you think has the most frequent car crashes?

If you guessed Henry Road and the Trans Canada Highway – and you probably did – go to the head of the class because you’re absolutely right.

The Insurance Corporation of B.C. recently released data as of April 2, 2022 that shows the number of auto accidents within every region of the province from 2017-2021.

Henry Road and the TCH and corresponding turn lanes easily led the way among Chemainus crash locations with 70 during that time period.

Second, as you also might expect, was another highway location at Mount Sicker Road where 42 crashes occurred.

River Road and the TCH and corresponding turn lanes also recorded a high number with 28 crashes.

The highest off-highway location within Chemainus was at the Chemainus Road roundabout with Oak Street and Victoria Road that had 27 crashes.

Four more spots reached double digits in accidents: The Chemainus Road and Crofton Road intersection, 19; Fuller Lake Road and the Trans Canada Highway and adjacent turn lanes, 13; The roundabout at Bare Point Road, Chemainus Road and Henry Road, 12; and Panorama Ridge Road and the Trans Canada Highway, 12.

There were less than 10 crashes at the remaining intersections recorded, mainly at the various crossroads of Chemainus Road.

In Crofton, the highest number of crashes was recorded at Adelaide Street and York Avenue with six. There were five at Robert Street and York Avenue and four at Chaplin Street and York Avenue.

Five other spots had three crashes each: Chaplin Street at Queen Street; Charlotte Street; Crofton Road at Hay Road; Joan Avenue at Queen Street; and Joan Avenue at York Avenue.

Westholme also takes into account the Mount Sicker Road intersection with the highway where 42 crashes happened. Somenos Road and the TCH had 18 crashes.

On Thetis Island, the Foster Point Road and Harbour Road intersection had two crashes, the only location with more than one on the island.

Single accidents occurred on Penelakut Island at three sites along Clam Bay Road.

Crash data and trends from 2020 and 2021 were impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic with lower counts than might normally be the case.

Figures are also broken down into casualty crashes that result in injury or fatality as well as property damage only crashes that result in material damage and no injury or fatality.

Maps exclude crashes in parking lots and involving parked vehicles. Crashes between intersections were plotted in the middle of the nearest two intersections.

Complete maps for each region on the Island are available here.
