If you’ve been dreaming of a White Christmas, you’re likely going to get your wish this year.

The latest forecasts are calling for periods of snow for Christmas and Boxing Day.

Chemainus weather observer/recorder Chris Carss said data going back 100 years shows a White Christmas occurs in these parts once every five years on average, “which is about twice the normal for this cool west coast climate.”

There was expected to be a period of freezing rain first before temperatures turned colder again and brought in snow for the Christmas weekend.

The south coast forecast looks favourable with an 80 or 90 per cent chance of snowfall for Dec. 25, according to Doug Lundquist, a meteorologist for Environment Canada.

There could be flurries on Christmas Eve, Lundquist noted, but he expects regular snowfall will wait until residents can “hunker down” for the holiday.
