“Ken has been involved in most, if not all, the significant incidents that have happened in Chemainus and North Cowichan in the 50 years since he started serving,” Douglas said.

“His nickname earlier on was Captain Cool due to his calm demeanour during large and often serious incidents. It is a privilege to present Ken with this medal from the Governor General of Canada.”

Douglas said the medal honours members of the Canadian fire services who have completed 20 years of fire service, in which duties involved potential risks.

“Exemplary service is characterized by good conduct, industry and efficiency which Ken has more than achieved,” he said.

“Ken’s medal includes three additional bars signifying the additional 30 years of service, bringing it to 50 in total. In addition to the medal, we are also honoured to present Ken with a wood plaque from the North Cowichan fire department. Ken, on behalf of council an the North Cowichan community, thank you for your incredible service.”
