The North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP is seeking assistance from the public to investigate a traffic incident that occurred on Sunday, March 17 just before 2 p.m. on the Trans Canada Highway near Fuller Lake Road in Chemainus.

While northbound lanes of the highway were closed due to an unrelated motorcycle crash, a gold or brown Audi A4 drove backwards alongside the stopped traffic on the shoulder of the road.

The Audi struck and damaged several other vehicles. The vehicle was located shortly after the situation was reported to police.

There were no injuries.

Investigating officers are attempting to determine who was in the vehicle at the time of the erratic and dangerous occurrence, and would like to review any dash camera footage or other videos or photos from members of the public, who witnessed the situation.

“Public safety is always our number one priority,” noted North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP Inspector Chris Bear. “The actions of this driver unnecessarily endangered the community and we are asking for your help to further our investigation. We appreciate the cooperation of anyone with more information.”

Anyone with information who witnessed the incident and has not spoken to police is asked to call North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP detachment at 250-748-5522 or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).

The highway was closed two hours for reconstruction of the motorcycle accident scene. Before the highway reopened, single-lane traffic got through on a detour down Fuller Lake Road to Cottonwood Road, Crozier Road and Chemainus Road before returning to the highway via Henry Road, but it was very slow going.
