One of Chemainus’ best kept musical secrets Nico Rhodes comes out from behind the curtain to shine in Roots & Grooves, coming to the Duncan Showroom Saturday April 21 at 7:30 pm.

Roots & Grooves combines an infamous folkie and a rising young jazz star 40 years apart in age. Dulcimer maverick Rick Scott is the elder and Rhodes the young keyboard ace in an inter-generational smorgasbord of folk, blues, jazz and humour.

At age 28, Rhodes has been the music director for 25 musicals, including 15 of them at the Chemainus Theatre where you rarely catch a glimpse of him behind the scenery. Following the Duncan Showroom concert, he will devote the summer leading the band for Grease at the Chemainus Theatre before heading to Ontario to direct two shows back-to-back this fall.

In constant demand, Rhodes has just completed an Island tour with Legends of Lightfoot, including at the Osborne Bay Pub in Crofton, and co-written a new musical. For the last year he has taken every opportunity to perform with his childhood idol, Scott, in Roots & Grooves.

“My childhood soundtrack was Beethoven, Oscar Petersen and Rick Scott,” he noted. “The guy oozes groove and I never dreamed I would have this chance to play with him like this.”

Rhodes and Scott have released a Roots & Grooves CD and performed 30 shows around B.C., dazzling audiences with their artistry and alchemy. A pioneer of rogue folk in B.C. with 19 recordings, three Juno nominations, WCMA and Canadian Folk Music Awards spanning 40 years, Scott has performed in nine countries.

Tickets are $20 in advance ($25 at the door) and can be purchased at https://showroomproductions.ca/buy-tickets.
