Most everyone knows about the brilliance of Beethoven.

A package of works from one of the world’s foremost composers will be the gift for those in attendance at Chemainus Classical Concerts on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 14 at 2 p.m. at St. Michael’s Church, 2858 Mill St. in Chemainus.

“Ludwig van Beethoven remains one of the most admired composers in the history of Western music and also had a reputation as a virtuoso pianist in his time,” noted Rykie Avenant, artistic co-director for Chemainus Classical Concerts. “His music reaches across time and reminds us of resilience in the face of adversity.”

Grisha Krivchenia will deliver an all-Beethoven program, including three iconic piano sonatas: Op. 27 no. 2 (Moonlight), Op. 31 no. 3 (The Hunt) and Op. 110.

Krivchenia is a versatile artist whose performances and original compositions have enthralled audiences throughout the Northern Hemisphere and his compositions are realized by professional ensembles worldwide. Recent premieres have taken place in Los Angeles, Seattle and Bucharest.

The Santa Fe Reporter in Santa Fe, New Mexico termed him “the coolest classical musician around.”

Krivchenia studied at Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Ohio and the University of Victoria School of Music. In 2007, he founded the music program at Spring Street International School in Friday Harbor, Washington.

Krivchenia takes a special interest in writing music in collaboration with hospice patients, veterans and recovering addicts. He recently completed a song cycle based on interviews with Syrian refugees living in Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey.

Since it’s Mother’s Day, “treat yourself, a friend and the mothers in your life to an afternoon of enriching music conceived by genius and brought to life by a gifted pianist,” enthused Avenant.

Tickets are $20 in advance by calling Eleanor Montour at 250-748-8383 or $25 at the door and $10 for Under 18.
