A well-known and popular duo will perform at the next Chemainus Classical Concerts event on Nov. 14.

Renowned soprano Eve Daniell will be accompanied on the piano by Rykie Avenant, the artistic co-director of the Chemainus Classical Concerts series, for a program that offers an insight into the life and work of Pauline Viardot, a 19th Century singer, pedagogue and genius composer.

”Please join Eve Daniell and myself for this recital of beautiful music by Viardot and her circle of friends and contemporaries,” noted Avenant.

The performance billed as ‘Forgotten Genius’ takes place at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 14 at St. Michael’s Church at 2858 Mill St. in Chemainus.

Tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for under 18, available in advance only by phoning Eleanor Montour at 250-748-8383. Masks and vaccine passports are mandatory for those attending the show.

Franz Liszt declared that the world had finally found a woman composer of genius in Pauline Viardot. She studied the piano with Liszt, played duets with her friend Chopin and had works dedicated to her by Saint-Saëns, Brahms, Fauré and Schumann.

A celebrated singer in her own time, Viardot’s legacy is still yet to be fully realized. Daniell and Avenant celebrate 200 years since Viardot’s birth with a program honouring her life’s work and that of her close contemporaries.

Although Viardot started composing at a young age, the majority of compositions by the consummate all-around musician came to the light towards the end of her life.

People are welcome to stay after the concert for the annual general meeting of the Chemainus Classical Concerts Society. Membership renewals will be taken at that time.
