The Public Market in Chemainus is hosting the official B.C. book launch of Cowichan Valley author Teresa Schapansky’s new 12-volume series of children’s books that introduce young readers to each of the Canadian provinces and territories.

The public will have a chance to meet Duncan’s Schapansky and her illustrator, Elly Mossman, at the Author’s Corner Bookstore from noon to 3 p.m. Friday, Dec. 17.

“We wanted to have a local one as well,” Schapansky said of the launch.

It follows the recent Alberta book launch at the Onoway Public Library in Onoway, Alberta, northwest of Edmonton. The first shipment there sold out.

Schapansky has also written the recent best-selling series, Coinkeeper: the Avery Chronicles.

Entitled Along the Way, her new series features a young dinosaur named Albert, who takes readers on make-believe road trips to points of interest around the country where they can learn amazing geographical and historical facts and be introduced to different cultures, cuisine, horticulture, science and more. Unfortunately, Albert is unable to join Schapansky and Mossman in Chemainus.

“Writing this series has been a labour of love and it literally took 15 years to find just the right illustrator that shares our vision,” Schapansky said.

Mossman brings every single cover and every page of the Along the Way series to life in vivid fashion.

The series encourages children ages 6-12 to broaden their horizons while sharpening their reading skills.

Adding a dinosaur like Albert from Alberta to narrate the books creates a mystical quality that resonates with children.

A percentage of the proceeds from the sale of each book will be donated quarterly to local children’s mental health programs and the series will be available at a discounted price for educators. Donations to local children’s mental health programs will be managed by Kids Strong and Free.

The Along the Way series will be available on Amazon and Schapansky is accepting advance prepaid orders via www.teresaschapansky.com. Schapansky’s website will also be updated frequently to announce retail locations.
