Surf’s up!

Surf scoter scours the waters off Chemainus for food

Seen in action along the beach in Chemainus: a surf scoter, captured on camera by Sylvie Newey during December.

The surf scoter is a large sea duck that winters along the Pacific coast.

This is a typical adult male, with characteristic white patches on the forehead. Adult females are slightly smaller and browner.

The diving ducks feed on mussels as an important part of their diet.
