Graeme Arkell’s 20th Century World History 12 students created this mural at the front of the school. They browsed through online pictures to select ones they felt embodied the spirit of remembrance and posted them up. This display has inspired many reflective and thoughtful conversations between students.

Every year the students at Chemainus Secondary School produce great work pertaining to Remembrance Day.

They do black and white posters, colour posters and essays for the Legion Youth Remembrance Contest sponsored by the Royal Canadian Legion through Chemainus Legion Branch 191.

We are pleased to share some of the student work that’s been completed so far, as they continued to work up to the deadline of Nov. 10.

Graeme Arkell, who coordinates the contest entries for the school, was hopeful of strong participation this year.

“One good sign is that several students have asked for entry forms,” he noted.

Luca Sherry, a Grade 11 student, created this poster. “I’m very proud of my poster because it took three days to create, and all together around nine hours of work. I really wanted to include a lot of detail on the poppies because they are a big reason why we remember on this day. One of the fighter planes flies through the sky on Remembrance Day to remember the soldiers that fought for our freedom.”
