Chemainus Secondary School student and Crofton resident Brooklyn Stobbe is not only a double winner at the local level for her poster prowess, but at the zone level as well.

Stobbe, who’s won the black and white and colour poster categories for the Royal Canadian Legion’s Remembrance Day poster and literary contest within the Chemainus Legion 191 branch throughout her high school years, did it again in the 2021 judging. The Grade 11 student attained first place locally and for the South Vancouver Island zone in the senior category.

Stobbe’s posters now go to the provincial level for judging.

Chemainus Legion 191 usually puts on a special ceremony for the students to announce the local winners, but that didn’t happen again due to COVID.

“The certificates and awards were taken to the schools and presented there,” noted Chemainus Legion’s Janet Mitchell. “Hopefully, next year we will be able to have a presentation ceremony.”

Students at Chemainus Secondary were recognized with a brief informal ceremony at the start of lunch hour in the office boardroom.

“We put a lot of smiles on faces,” observed teacher Graeme Arkell, who coordinates the program at the school.

One other student was the recipient of an award in the South Vancouver Island judging. Alina Ensminger of Thetis Island Elementary was awarded second place in the Primary Colour Poster division after receiving first for the branch.

Chemainus Secondary had nine award recipients in the branch contest, some in more than one category.

Ashley Loeffen and Luca Sherry were second and third, respectively, for Senior Colour Poster; Loeffen also earned second in Senior Black and White Poster; Keirah Giles came first for Senior Poetry; Saige Harcos claimed first and Thomas Blake second in Intermediate Colour Poster; Callia Banks was first and Perlamaria Martinez second in Intermediate Black and White Poster; Ayla Vanham captured first and Banks second in Intermediate Poetry; and Martinez was declared the winner for Intermediate Essay.

Alina Ensminger’s Primary Colour Poster win was followed by Thetis Island students Dominic Nieto-Sosa in second and Athenia Nettleton in third. Other results for Thetis Island students included: Junior Poetry – 1. Holly Sharp, 2. Anika Elias, 3. Aubrey Gall; and Junior Colour Poster – 1. Amelia Ensminger.

For Crofton Elementary, Junior Colour Poster results had Sadie Kenyon in second place and Jocelyn Price in third.
