The Chemainus Valley Historical Society is taking the time during the pandemic closure of the Chemainus Valley Museum to do some maintenance work and such things as exhibit enhancing, but membership is in definite need of a boost.

Like so many other organizations, the society’s membership has been decreasing. The call is out for people to consider becoming members of the society. Large and small commitments as time allows for individuals are welcomed.

The society board is also urging others who feel they can’t commit to membership at this time to consider making a donation. Memberships also make a unique gift idea and tax receipts are available.

More information is available by visiting https://chemainusvalleymuseum.ca or on the Chemainus Valley Museum Facebook page.

The Chemainus Valley Historical Society was established in 1963 by a group of dedicated volunteers with a desire to preserve the vast history of Chemainus. A massive community effort resulted in the creation of the Chemainus Valley Museum that opened in 1991. In 2013, further community involvement spearheaded an expansion project, with the revamped museum opening in 2019.

The society needs further help to realize its goal of giving back to the community by preserving and sharing the area’s vibrant history.

Membership consists of a yearly fee and an invitation to an annual event, but also provides many opportunities. These include: volunteering behind the scenes; assisting in the preservation of personal heirlooms and photos; documenting current history; becoming a museum volunteer and introducing visitors to the varied history of Chemainus; helping to develop community programming and education; joining a crafting circle for stocking the gift shop; sharing knowledge of the area with visitors and local residents; and becoming a board member to help guide the future.
