A walk for guide dogs is giving Canadians a new leash on life.

The Chemainus/Crofton C To Sea Lions Club is hosting the Pet Valu Walk for Guide Dogs in Chemainus for the first time Sunday, May 27 at Maple Lane by Waterwheel Park in Chemainus. Registration is at 10 a.m. and the event runs until noon.

Participants can pick up a pamphlet with complete information that also contains a pledge form at Beyond The Usual on Willow Street, Maple Lane Cafe or the Chemainus Animal Hospital on Croft Street.

“All the money goes to the Lions Club guide dogs,” said Judy Istace, the treasurer of the C To Sea Lions Club, a small group with about a dozen members.

“We could always use some more,” she added.

The Lions meet on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m. at Maple Lane Cafe.

Istace urges everyone to get their pledge sheets as soon as possible for the important fundraising venture.

The walk will be about one kilometre and “it’s just kind of around town,” she said.

“It’s actually an international walk for guide dogs. All the Lions Clubs are picking that day. It’s a huge event.”

Guide dogs play an important role in peoples’ lives in so many ways, assisting with vision, hearing, service, seizure response, autism assistance and diabetic alerts.
