Staff Sgt. Ken Brissard of the Ladysmith RCMP detachment will speak about property crime prevention, guarding against fraud and identity theft.
Identity theft is an insidious crime that can create great financial burdens, affect one’s reputation and take months to clear up.
Many people have been victims of fraud. There are several methods fraudsters may employ, but in most cases if one can identify a fraud situation, protection can be as simple as hanging up the telephone or as complex and anxiety-laden as trying to identify whether the caller is who they say they are.
Brissard will discuss many of the schemes.
In January, the church hosted an information session and discussion on the seismology of earthquakes and preparedness for earthquakes. The good news is there is little danger in this area from tsunamis resulting from earthquakes occurring off the west coast of the Island.
The bad news is most people haven’t made any preparations in the event of a substantial earthquake. Mid-Island Emergency Coordinators and Managers have updated and reprinted the Emergency Preparedness Workbook. This publication guides one through the preparations that need to be made and outlines what should be done in an emergency. The publication is available at municipal offices and public libraries.
After the lecture series and panel discussion in November on climate change, about 20 persons decided to get together to discuss what could be done to reduce our individual or community carbon footprint.
The group will next meet on March 6 at 7 p.m. at the Chemainus United Church. Anyone is welcome.
