The mural collection in Chemainus is destined for up to three new additions in the months ahead.
The Chemainus Rotary Club sent a request to the Municipality of North Cowichan to consider the installation of a new mural on the north end of the Chemainus Road bunker where the club collects bottle donations.
“They own the building,” noted Rotary Club member Tom Andrews, who doubles as president of the Chemainus Festival of Murals Society. “We had to go through council to get approval.”
Council agreed to authorize the installation of the mural and signage and directed staff to work with the society on the installation.
“We already have a theme and a photoshop (picture) we’ll send out to artists,” Andrews explained.
The mural, he said, will consist of three scenes to be done on marine plywood panels.
The left side will show some Rotary community involvement such as during the SummerFest celebrations, the middle will be a scene highlighting the international component of the club and to the right will be something that shows the humanitarian side of club projects. Details will be revealed once the artist is selected and the work begins.
The good thing about doing it on panels, Andrews noted, is artists can often do the work in their own studios and then it’s just a matter of installing the panels when it’s done, similar to the mural that was added late last year to the side of the building that will eventually become Violet Wild Cannabis Co.

“The artist can do a much better job,” reasoned Andrews.
The overall dimensions of the mural will be about four feet by 14 feet.
“The Rotary club will sponsor part of the funding,” Andrews added.
There’s also a project in the works to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Chemainus Fire Department with a mural and the Mount Brenton Golf Club is interested in having a mural done on the clubhouse at the golf course at some point.
