More than $600 has been raised through Angela Seguin’s December Pet of the Month at Krazy Kritter Kookies for Casey, a dog who suffered life-threatening injuries during a recent attack by a juvenile cougar in Ladysmith.
Seguin noted $611 was in the kitty at her Chemainus Public Market location for the recovering pooch as of Dec. 29.
“People are welcome to make donations for Casey until the end of the month at the store,” noted Seguin.
“Casey visited the Chemainus Public Market for a few hours and caught the hearts of many.”
Mary Carr’s two dogs, Casey and JoJo, were attacked by the juvenile cougar on her property on Takala Road Oct. 22. Carr and a friend intervened just as the cougar was poised over Casey.
“The cougar was scared off when they saw a person, and heard us calling for Casey,” Carr said.
Carr rushed the dogs to Chase River Animal Hospital. JoJo was treated for relatively minor wounds, but Casey had to be treated at Boundary Bay Veterinary Specialty Hospital in Vancouver and underwent an eight-hour surgery to remove a bone fragment from the brain. An eye was removed as well.
“I thought Casey was dead, and we were lucky that JoJo wasn’t, but when she showed signs of life we just went for it. It’s been a surprise for everybody, even the vets, they don’t know of any dogs that have survived a cougar attack,” Carr said.
The Carrs were ecstatic Casey is recovering, but the family incurred $30,000 in vet bills for her life-saving care.

When Seguin got wind of the incident, she wanted to do whatever she could to help. That’s the focus of her Pet of the Month campaign and the funds from December were directed toward Casey’s enormous bills.
Seguin is still looking for January’s Pet of the Month. Anyone struggling to pay a surprise vet bill or is part of an animal charity that could use the funds is welcome to reach out to her at the store or by email at krazykritterkookies@hotmail.ca.
