It’s the 100th anniversary of the Chemainus Fire Department.

There would have been a lot more hoopla surrounding the occasion if not for COVID, but it’s still worthy of our full acknowledgement and appreciation despite the lack of any public opportunities to celebrate.

Angela Carlson painted a commemorative mural for the anniversary that was affixed to a wall at the back of the Chemainus Post Office earlier this year that depicts part of the department’s history.

Fire Chief Al Irwin and the current Chemainus members are maintaining a century-old tradition of service in the community that always goes above and beyond the call of duty. Several firefighters have literally been with the department for decades.
