A Duncan Rotary food drive collected more than 3,500 pounds of food for the Cowichan Valley Basket Society in April.
"The Cowichan Valley Basket Society provides a vital and valuable service in our community making sure that the mouths of our community members are fed and well stocked," said the Rotary Club.
The Rotary Club of Duncan ran a food drive to help stock the society's shelves starting over Easter weekend. While some were hunting for eggs, 1,200 bright blue bags donated by London Drugs were distributed to homes throughout the City of Duncan and North Cowichan. On April 26, Rotarians and friends returned to neighbourhoods to collect the bags.
“The Rotary Club thanks both the Duncan and North Cowichan communities for their generosity," said club president Karen Thorington. “Households donated over 3,500 pounds of goods, and in dollars, this equates to $12,750.”
The Club also received $650 in cash donations.
Khowutzun Forest Services, 89.7 SUN FM and the Citizen stepped up as corporate sponsors, while RBC Dominion Securities, and the Duncan Daybreak Rotary Club provided teams to help with the collection.
“Families facing food insecurity are seeing an increase each month," said Basket Society manager Henry Wikkerink. "Cash and food donations are essential throughout the year. CVBS is incredibly grateful to Rotary for organizing this food drive during a period of lower donations, and additionally, we extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed food.”
