Coffee Shack and Artisanal Gelato Production are rural microbusinesses in Saltair at 10862 Chemainus Road that have changed with the times to keep operating.

“They are making sure we have access to outrageously good coffee, tasty treats and artisanal gelato as we self-isolate and stay local,” noted Lynne Smith, the Cowichan Valley Regional District Area G (Saltair/Gulf Islands) director. “They do not qualify for federal or provincial COVID-19 pandemic, business assistance.

Albi De Nardi, the owner of Artisanal Gelato Production, has adapted his business during the COVID-19 pandemic, hitting the road in his replica 1925 Fleur-de-lis Ford. De Nardi usually has about 10 flavours of artisanal gelato to choose from.

Home delivery, birthday parties and neighbourhood gatherings can normally be accommodated. You can order 500 gram tubs for $7.50 or 700 gram tubs for $10 and scoops are also available. You can reach De Nardi by text at (250) 510-3470 to make plans.

He covers the entire Cowichan Valley from Mill Bay to Ladysmith, with home delivery times from 1-5:30 pm. On Wednesdays, De Nardi is at the Crofton ferry terminal from 1-3 p.m. and he’ll be adding more times and locations in the future.

Joseph Bataller and Samantha White own and operate the Coffee Shack. They took some time off before figuring out how they could reopen.

The Coffee Shack has now reopened for pickup with a full coffee menu, cold drinks and treats. New items are being added daily and they also have artisanal gelato.

They can be reached at (778)-422-3300 or (236)-688-1777.

“Let’s demonstrate our community support,” enthused Smith. “We waited a long time for a local coffee shop. Head over for a cup of coffee, treat and visit with Samantha and Joseph. Bring a lawn chair. You might want to invite a friend to meet you there for a physically distanced, coffee-time chat.

“Some of the home-based businesses are opening provided they can provide the social distancing within their areas,” she added.
