C.J. Loranger definitely has star quality.

Loranger accounted for more than half of the Chemainus Secondary School Cougars junior boys basketball team’s points in its first game back since the Christmas break. Unfortunately, it still wasn’t enough in a 53-30 loss Thursday at Brentwood College.

Loranger pumped in three-point shots, pulled off several fadeaway shots and added some layups in a superb 18-point effort that helped keep Chemainus in contention, but Brentwood always seemed to counter to stay in control.

“Despite the great effort of our boys today, we weren’t able to get the win,” noted Chemainus coach Graeme Arkell.

The Cougars had a make-up game at home Wednesday against Duncan Christian School and also plays Cowichan Secondary Thursday at 2 p.m. at Chemainus Secondary School.
