The John Hicks Memorial Golf Tournament has a long-standing tradition at the Mount Brenton Golf Course.
Junior golfers from around the Island and Powell River have traditionally made the tournament part of their summer plans and the latest event last Tuesday, July 26 was no exception.
There haven’t always been a lot of juniors from Mount Brenton in recent years, but some newcomers are showing an interest in the sport to follow in the path of phenomenal past players.
The junior/nine hole category featured Heidi Simpson of Mount Brenton, who shot a 71.
Joe Apter of Crown Isle Golf Club had a 51 for first followed closely by Kaleb Ketch of Duncan Meadows Golf Course with a 52 and Steve Zhang placed third on a countback.
Terrific twins from the Nanaimo Golf Club topped the girls event. Isabel Schwager was first with an 84, five shots ahead of sister Maria’s 89.
The boys division was highly-competitive. Manny (Manpreet) Lalh of Nanaimo Golf Club led the way with a 71, two shots ahead of Mack Sanderson from Pheasant Glen Golf Resort.
Sting Zhang of Highland Pacific Golf Club and Samuel Kurytnik of Nanaimo Golf Club both shot 74, Lucas Vizzutti of Myrtle Point Golf Club in Powell River had a 77, Ryder Eaves from Pheasant Glen Golf Resort shot an 80 and Denver Flood from Storey Creek Golf Club carded a 96.
“Thank you for your interest shown to our kids and, hopefully, a bigger field next year,” noted Mount Brenton’s longtime Hicks tournament organizer Pat Irwin.
