You can’t always include everyone

There are times when making a selection is better than going overboard

This recent trend toward all-inclusiveness is getting ridiculous.

You have to question the sincerity of people who are essentially jumping on the ‘bandwagon.’

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, of course, is the biggest culprit. His recent comment about using the word ‘peoplekind’ instead of ‘mankind’ is just pure nonsense. He claims it was a joke. It wasn’t. He meant to say it exactly as it came out.

On a local level, we also seem to be taking this desire for all-inclusiveness too far. We want to include every Cowichan Valley community in every event.

The Cowichan BC Summer Games is a case in point. Is it really necessary to have Mill Bay, Shawnigan Lake, Cobble Hill, Duncan, Chemainus, Timbuktu and every place in between hosting some part of it?

Having a Games with a central focus - in this case, Duncan - with a smattering of sites in the neighbouring communities would have been fine. But we’re going to have athletes spread all over hell’s half acre.

Chemainus should have been chosen for the additional baseball games to complement the schedule at Evans Park in Duncan. But we couldn’t leave Ladysmith out so it will be hosting some games, even though it probably identifies more with the Nanaimo region than the Cowichan Valley.

The only reason Nanaimo is included in these Cowichan Games as well is because of the extra pool time required to handle the overflow at the Cowichan Aquatic Centre.

As Chemainus and District Baseball Association president Larry Hopwo pointed out, Chemainus is better equipped as the baseball venue than Ladysmith.

Doesn’t it make sense to have the games at the best possible site rather than trying to cater to everyone?
