Crimes of convenience are occurring day and night in North Cowichan/Duncan.

Police have fielded numerous complaints of thefts from mailboxes and break-ins and thefts from vehicles during the past month. The thieves have left their mark in Chemainus, Duncan and all parts in-between. Many of these thefts have happened overnight with no witnesses.

North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP are asking the public to make sure vehicles are secure and collect mail daily.

“Do not leave anything valuable in your vehicles during the day or night and lock your doors,” noted North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP media relations officer Cpl. Krista Hobday in a media release. “If you can, park your vehicle in a well lit area and have an anti-theft device installed.”

Mail boxes are being pried open and mail taken without the rightful owner knowing it is missing. “If you are expecting mail and have not received it, please call Canada Post and report the circumstances to them,” advises Hobday.

North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP investigate every reported incident of theft. “It is important that we know the time, location and details of the crime committed against you to assist us in identifying those responsible,” added Hobday.
